Lance’s Portfolio – Fantasy Baseball 2017
I always find it a bit interesting that the fantasy baseball industry is flooded with experts, yet rarely do we see what their portfolio of players looks like for the coming season.
You’ll see a ton of reactions to individual drafts from LABR and Tout, but aside from that, not many other high-profile leagues are followed too closely. I’ve always desired an aggregate look at the specific crop of talent my fellow experts have put together.
Why not start the trend right here?
If you play in enough leagues, you’ll have exposure to almost every player. Cut back on the crazy amount of teams most experts manage. Your top five team is all that really matters.
These are the units you’ll live and die by, through thick and thin. With no reason to audible towards a better team you had on the back burner but didn’t have any confidence in.
I will be most active in managing these squads for the coming year, in no particular order.
I’m proud to call them my own.
CBS Expert H2H Points League
Notable participants: Scott White, Al Melchoir, Heath Cummings, Brant Chesser, Mike Kuchera
Format specifics: 12 teams, Standard CBS-style H2H points, $100 FAAB, weekly locks
My draft slot: Auction
Draft Time: Mid-March
My confidence level (out of 5 stars): 4.5 / 5 – I finished 2nd in this league last year, and am confident this team will find me back in the finals.
Here are some notes on what I paid… Shield your eyes from that Bumgarner value, I know it burns!
Overpaid: Bumgarner ($39), Carrasco ($23)
Just Right: Harper ($38), K. Hendricks ($17), Piscotty ($15), Darvish ($31), Franco ($16)
Bargains: Cole ($16), Paxton ($8), Pederson ($4), E. Diaz ($12)
NFBC Draft Champions
Notable participants: 15 guys who decided to pay $150 for a shot at $28k!
Format specifics: 15 teams, Draft-and-Hold, weekly locks, standard 5×5 roto, No waivers, 50 rounds
My draft slot: Snake 5th of 12
Draft Time: Early March
My confidence level (out of 5 stars): 3.5 / 5 – Going to need Carrasco healthy to have a shot
CBS Expert NL-Only Roto League
Notable participants: Jeff Zimmerman, Grey from Razzball, Mike Gianella, Chris Towers, Scott White
Format specifics: 5×5 Roto, weekly locks, NL Only, 12 teams
My draft slot: Auction, 7-spot snake reserve draft post auction
Draft Time: Very early March
My confidence level (out of 5 stars): 3.5 / 5 – Too many $1 players, first time in this league & format. I’ll learn from my mistakes.
The best value in any expert auction on planet earth this season? Jacob deGrom for $17. To yours truly.
Razzball Writer’s League
Notable participants: The Razzball Crew: Matt Trussell, M@, Viz, SON, Kerry Klug
Format specifics: 5×5 Roto, 12 teams, daily locks
My draft slot: Snake Draft – 10th out of 12
Draft Time: Late March
My confidence level (out of 5 stars): 4 / 5 – Classic daily lock roto, going to be all about waiver acquisitions. Like the base of power, but scared of my lack of speed.
Hometown 10 Team Category League
Notable participants: This league has been running 4 years strong. Vote to switch from 2016’s 5×5 roto to H2H Categories successful by popular vote.
Format specifics: H2H, 5×5 category league, 10 teams (very shallow, impossible not to like your team)
My draft slot: Snake Draft – 7th out of 10
Draft Time: End of March
My confidence level (out of 5 stars): 5 / 5 – Defending champ, looking to repeat, with the core of bats and upside arms to do exactly that.
